June 2012 Meeting

Ipad/Iphone connector:

If you buy an Ipad3, any old digital connector you bought will not work, apple makes you buy a new one like this:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD098ZM/A,

If you just want to put your iphone or ipad screen on a TV, for $99, apple TV is the way to go, that way when you buy your iphone 5, or ipad 3 1/2, you won't be buying yet another connector that looks remarkably like the old one!

MobileMe shutting down!

Granted, I only know two people that were using mobile me, but both somehow lost most of their contacts in the transition...

Kodak easy share is being moved to shutterfly, hopefully that will work out a lot better.

Signatures with preview

Preview has had anotations for quite a while, but now it makes it easy to add a signature to a document to send back to someone.

NeoOffice

If you have had a document that you could not open, or did not want to pay for a version of office that you do not use very much, the people that make the neooffice have upgraded it to have lots of Lion Funcionality:

It will open more files than Microsoft Word for the mac, one thing I usually do after I install is change the default save format to word so other people can open my files.

http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

The only problem is that the newest version requires a donation to download....

The LibreOffice is not as optimized for the mac as the neooffice, but is still better than the stock openoffice:

FreeSMUG

A good place to find open source software for the mac is freesmug, it lists several of my favorite programs like audacity, and VLC

http://www.freesmug.org/

Net Analyzer

You will probably have to turn off little snitch to get this to run, it does a full scan of how you connect to the internet

It takes several minutes to run, but at the end it gives you a full report of anything that could be improved on your internet connection.

Free online classes

There are some free classing and educational materials popplisting up on the net, the one that has the most news is the KhanAcademy

http://www.khanacademy.org/

It focuses on high school level instruction

I have been taking classes from Udacity

http://www.udacity.com/

You can sign up for a class for free, and you don't have to sign up to watch these videos.

They have basic and advance programing, web programing, robotic cars, and encryption.

The most interesting class (for me) is the robot car one Here are some of my favorite videos from the class:

Self Driving Car
SLAM making maps while driving robot

Car driving in Maze

Instro showing self driving car
http://www.udacity.com/view#Course/cs373/CourseRev/apr2012/Unit/512001/Nugget/514001

The encryption class had several neat parts as well,

Breaking Cell phone encryption

Colossus from WWII

Mophie case has a case with a battery.

T here are lots of cases that have a battery, It will usually double the battery life of your iphone in case you do things that eat up the battery, or need some extra juice for a long trip.

Mac Virus

Have you wondered why people write viruses? Well in the old days they used to do it for fun, or because they were bored, now they do it for profit! If the mac botnet had not been shut down, the hackers COULD have earned $10,000 /Day!

PDF editors, changing documents on your ipad

3 PDF Readers for the ipad/phone.  Note that they have all been around since 2010, so if you find an old review saying that this or that program does not have this or that feature, they pretty much all have all the same features now...

The GoodReader
Goodreader has better crop and zoom features, and is the cheapest of the full featured PDF editors. But the Ipad version will not work on the iphone...

IAnnotate
I annotate is supposed to have the easiest interface, but still has most of the features of the other two.

PDF Expert
The PDF Expert is the best at filling in forms on a PDF, but only on PDF's specifically designed to be a form. Adding a signature to a PDF is easier with this app too.  It also will let you add stamps to PDF files.  If you want to go paperless, but still have signed documents, then this one is the way to go.

Free one for just signing documents

If you want a whole group of people to sign one particular document, you can't beat this app that is free:

Taking Notes

Noteability is aimed at college kids taking notes in class, but it will also let you mark up PDF files as well.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/notability-take-notes-annotate/id360593530?mt=8

Good notes is only for taking notes, it has a free and paid version...

Skitch
was just acquired by evernote, and it is free, it lets you markup pictures.

Iphone charger

Somebody decided to take apart their $50 charger to see what makes it tick, and they were suprised at how sophisticated it was.

Apps of the month:

I have never used a translator program that worked well until I downloaded this one, it was only .99!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/itranslate-voice/id522626820?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2

If I could get this to work, it would have been neat: Wi Camera

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wi-camera-live-streaming-your/id516904347?mt=8

This one lets you use your iphone like a wireless projector if you happen to have a computer hooked up to a big tv:

Air Projector

Air Projector Free

Cardmunch will let you take pictures of all your business cards, and then you can throw them away!

http://cardmunch.com/

Synthcam is pretty neat, it lets you get depth-the-field from an iphone camera
