February 2010 Meeting

Macs reach 11%!

Really, it is not suprising, people who use a pc on the internet do not have a working computer for long...

Time Machine

I did some reasearch, and time machine does not make a bootable backup, but there is a workaround:

Also, when you restore a time machine backup, you need to boot from your leopard DVD, and go to tools, then restore

HDTV on you mac

I brought some cable to hook up your mac to an hdtv...

This cable will output a full sound and video to your HDMI tv

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2

This will convert a minidisplayport to HDMI, but it will not have the sound

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2

You can hook up your audio to a surround sound system with a Toslink to Mini M/M

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022902&p_id=1558&seq=1&format=2

If you have a laptop with an older DMI output, you can buy a DMI to HDMI cable, which does not carry the sound.

Pico Projectors

there are a new round of low-cost projectors taht are really small and cheap.

the problem with them is that they only do 480x320, 640x480 or 800x600. You would want the 800x600 for reading text, the other ones would be fine for pictures and video.

The Aaxa P2 is only $350 and is a 800x600

Their top pick is the 3M Mpro120 and can be found for $300

New office alternative

Ever since microsof made the new DocX and xlsx formats, it has been difficult to open the new documents on a mac, there is a new program called the go-office that is a better version than the plain old open office.

This particular version of the open office has more converters (even for works), and has VBA support, which some people on the mac have needed for a while.

The original open office is here

The OSX polished version was the neo office:

Privacy on the internet:

There used to be a false sense of privacy, if someone hired a personal investigator, they could find out a lot of information about someone else. With the internet and the freedom of information act, the lack of privacy is apparent. What used to be a trip to the courthouse is now just a mouse click away.

The amount of information has not changed, the availability of the information has changed.

Old leases and deeds at the court house had social security numbers, full names and lots of information that could be used nowdays to 'steal' someone's identity.

New leases and deeds do not have this information because anyone in the world has access to this public record information.

The first and most useful resource is Texas file, anything that is recorded in a courthouse in Texas is here available for searching and downloading, you can download deeds leases and agreements, but you can also download plats and maps too!

You have to register to search, and pay a small fee to download pages.

The country tax office searches are here.

At the tax office you can find the value of any piece of property, who owns it, and when it was built:

This is usefull if you ad-valorum taxes knock your hat off, and you want to see if all your neighbors lost their headware too...

for san pat county it is here:

Another resource that is available is manta:

http://www.manta.com/

They have information about any company you can think of, and they take a guess on how many people there are and annual gross revenue of the company.

It will also tell you how long they have been in business.

The state comptrollers office has a business lookup that is at:

Lastly, there is the Texas railroad commission, which can tell you how much production that each oil and gas well has

ONLINE backup solutions

The neatest one right now is dropbox.

https://www.dropbox.com/

It works a lot like a mymac account, except it will sync between PC, Mac and your cellphone.

The first 2 gigs are free, and if you need more space it's $10/month for 50 gigs.

SpiderOak is just like dropbox, only a little cheaper

https://spideroak.com/pricing

MOZY

We have talked about mozy several times, and it has a 2GB for free service:

https://mozy.com/registration/free

It is $5/month for non-commercial use only, you have to sign up for their more expensive program if you a commercial user...

This one I have found is the leanest backup program:

http://www.backblaze.com/

It is $5/month, unlimited storage, and does not say anything about commercial or non-commercial for that price.

I am including these for completeness, but have not used them personally:
