Feburary 2007 meeting

Iphone:

The Iphone is a full blown macintosh computer with 4 ($499) or 8 ($599) gigabytes of ram.

It is just like having a Phone / Ipod Nano / Macintosh PDA all in one! One big problem for some people is that you must have Cingular as your cell phone provider to get an Iphone.

The best way to see what it can do is to go to apple's webiste. Or this video demonstrates some of the features.

Iphone Shuffle:

Not many people know this, but the Iphone shuffle is comming too! It will be the smallest phone in the world when it is released.

The other big item was AppleTV

AppleTV is just like Airtune, but for video, for $299.

You hook up AppleTV to your TV just like you would a VCR. When you download a movie to Itunes, it will send it to your AppleTV wirelessly. Then you can watch any of your Itunes videos in the comfort of your livingroom on you regular TV.

Tubesock

Tubesock is a nifty program that will let you download movies from Youtube and put them into Itunes to play on your computer, Ipod or through AppleTV. You can download it here.

Web 2.0

People are touting the newer websites in which you can interact with the webpages as Web 2.0. Here are a few examples:

Youtube:

According to Wikipedia, Youtube is a videosharing website which lets anyone upload and share their videos.

Before youtube, you could either have a website with some video on it, or try to have a video Podcast to get your footage out there. Now anyone with a $35 webcam can put some video of themselves on youtube.

If you search for anything on youtube, you will find a video to match.

Wikipedia:

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia where the content is written by the people that visit the site. This means that very current events can show up on wikipedia, but it also means that the information can be very very wrong. In my experince most of the information is pretty accurate, and the moderaters do not put up with people that play games trying to post bogus information. They have banned certain universities from posting and even certain countries that ususally post wrong information.

Craigslist:

If you watch CSI or Law and Order, you might hear them talking about craigslist alot. Craigslist started out in the San Fransisco area as a way to put up classified ads on the internet for free. If you don't live in San Fransisco, now there is a list of states and cities on the right hand side so you can get more local. You can look for a house appartment or a job. There is a disscussion forum with a mac department. The discussions are nationwide, but if you have a question, this is a good place to ask it.

MySpace :

Myspace is a place where everyone can have a personal web page with none of the work. In the old days (say 2 years ago) People go onto the internet and did a live chat with their friends. Now that is too much trouble since not everybody can be on at the same time. If you want to leave a message for someone, you go to their myspace page and leave them a message and/or a picture. If you search for the town you live in, you might be suprised to find someone you know.

Facebook:

Facebook is almost just like myspace, but it used to let only people with a colledge email address sign up for it. To get more people in, they let anybody sign up...

Google Docs & Spreadsheets:

Google docs will let you make a word document or spreadsheet right on the internet. It is not as full featured as Word or Excel, but it has almost everything most users would need. There are several advantages to it. If you are on a trip and need to work on your project, all you need is any computer on the internet. Also, you can let someone else proofread and edit you document on the internet and you will be able to see the changes as soon as they are done without having to email the file around.

Flickr:

Flickr is like youtube, but it only has pictures. There is some really good ones if you can find them.

Emulators:

For those who need to run an old program, there are a few emulators that will let you run system 8/9 programs.

SheepShaver link 1 link 2

This will let you emulate a PowerPC on your intel mac! It can run system 9 and 8.5

Basilisk II

This only emulates 68K macintoshes (no PowerPC). For some people this might be just what they need.

PearPC

This one is a little different because it can run on a windows machine. It hopes to achieve a 10 to 1 speed, meaning if you have a 2 gigahertz pentium, it will run as fast as a 200 Mhz Power PC....
