Sending large files!

Have you ever needed to send a large file through E-mail and it just wouldn't go? Most email providers (aol, yahoo) limit you to around 10 megs, but some limit you down to 3 meg files!

With digital pictures being around 1.5 megs, that is just not very handy. There is at a website called yousendit.com that solves the problem very well.

It will let you send files up to 1 gig! And it keeps the file on their server 7 days. Note that most broadband limits your upload speed, so it might not be practical if the files are too large.

One way to send pictures is flickr. Flickr is like an Iphoto for the internet. You put your pictures on there and then anyone can see them. There is a nice Iphoto extension that will take any picture from your Iphoto library and put it on flickr for you! Note that you would not want to use this for photos that you want to keep private!

Internet Phones:

Ichat

If you have a mac, and someone you know has a mac that lives far away and you both have Tiger, then IChat is the way to go! You do not need a camera for Ichat to work, and if you have audio only, up to 10 people can chat at the same time! If you have cameras up to 4 people can video chat.

Most people you know don't have macs, and some don't even have a computer!

Skype

There is a fairly new program called Skype.

It works alot like ICQ except it has Mac, PC, Linux, and PDA versions! All that is needed it two people that have computers. If you don't have a microphone, a pair of headphones plugged in the microphone jack works remarkably well. You can use Skypeout to call a real phone for about 2 cents a minute. And if you need to send someone a large file, Skype can send it to the other person.

Podcasting

What is podcasting?

Imagine you wanted to listen to some radio show that is on the internet. Normally you would download the MP3, import it into Itunes, Synch your Ipod up and NOW you can listen to your radio program on the road.

Podcasting is the process of picking which shows you might want to listen to, and then the program automatically does all the steps to put the show on your ipod whenever a new show comes out!

Ipodderx is a good Podcasting program. It has a free version Ipodderx lite. It lets you pick what shows you want to download and put on your ipod. There is a rumor that the next version of Itunes will have this built in as well.

If you want to find a podcast to listen to, PodCast Alley is the TV guide of podcasting.

TWIT

One Podcast I like is This Week In Tech (TWIT for short). This show is most of the cast from The Screen Savers that used to be on TechTV. They are pretty entertaining and they do talk about macs from time to time. If you miss seeing Leo Laparte on The Screen Savers, he is still on the Canadian TV show called Call For Help 2.0. Kevin Rose is now doing a internet only show called Systm.

One neat thing about TWIT is that they use Skype to make the podcast. They can have guests join the feed with the conference feature of Skype.

Internet Archive

The internet archive has old pages from years past of any website you wish to browse. It's neat to go back to apple's website from 1996.

John Deer Imperial Walker

Not mac related, but really cool.

So you thought all those high tech vehicles in the Star Wars movies were just fiction, well.... here is a modern day version of some of those futuristic vehicles! Life imitating art...

John Deer has made a tree logger that is not on wheels, but walks on 6 legs....! Here was a video page

BUT, they took it down.... Google went to the rescue, and here are the 3 videos: one two three
