Virtual PC

Microsoft now make Virtual PC

This program will let you run any PC program on your mac! The important change to version 7 is that the new version will now work on a G5 processor. They also made it a little faster. Emulation is always slower than buying a PC, so if you need a lot of speed, do not bother with Virtual PC, but if you just need to run some essential PC programs then this is for you.

Pricing:

You can buy it with windows built in. You would want this for 2 reasons. You don't have a copy of windows handy, or you wish to save time when you install Virtual PC, installing windows under emulation will take a few hours. The downside is that it costs $100 more.

Without windows it's at $130 right now.

Making backup copies of DVD's

If you have children, you know that your DVD's get destroyed in a hurry. (Peanut butter comes to mind)

All you need a couple of programs to help you to that.

Someone else's guide

If you don't like how I describe it here is a guide that shows you how to do it!

In the guide you most likely want DVD to DVDr

Note that if you don't have a DVD burner you can use the DVD to SVCD guide to make a Regular CD with the movie on it!

You have to do 3 things to make it all work:

Ripping:

First you must get the information off the dvd Mac The Ripper is a good program for that

here are some sites that describe it for you: 1 2 3

Compressing:

Most DVD's are more than the 4 gigs you can burn on a blank DVD, so you will have to have a program that will do this for you

DVD2ONE is a good program but hard to find

Roxio make a new program called Popcorn that will compress and burn the new DVD

Burning:

Once you have the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive that will fit on a DVD, you can burn it with toast.

Note that you can play a ripped DVD on your hard drive just by double clicking it. Windows users can not do this unless they buy special software to do it!
