StMug Meeting for August:

Well, the meeting went fairly well, I hauled my G4 tower up to the meeting so I could show off the preview of Panther. The iBook would not have been able to demonstrate some of the eye-candy features utilizing Quartz Extreme. We went through the new Finder windows to how they will speed up file navigation. The Find function which works with you as you type is referred to as 'smart searching' and works fantastically. We saw how fast user switching worked with its dramatic effect moving from one desktop to the other. New system preferences were evident: security and enegy saving panels along with keyboard shortcuts which will allow for customizing shortcuts much like QuickKeys.

Faxing is built in and we went over how it can save paper on your end by not needing to print and then fax from an external machine.

Mail is beefed up with the Safari HTML rendering tookit. Address book is better and more tightly integrated with Mail and the fax feature.

Labels are back for the finder. Folder actions are now activated through a pop-up menu (control-click or the 'second button on a two button mouse'

I think the show stopper was Expose. Either shrinking all open windows simultaniously, bringing only the front apps windows up or clearing the desktop with one key, you could hear the approval from those in attendance. It's customizable to any of the function keys you might want to use or cursor position in the corners of the screen. This will be a great navigation tool for open programs and windows.
