October 2008 meeting notes:

Personal Backup:

Intego gave us a copy of personal backup to review and here it is:

Itunes:

The new Itunes is out with the new ipods, it has a genius playlist button, a grid view, HDTV content in the apple store, and some new visualizations.

If you want to rip your entire collection, the default settings are 128 kbps, AAC. For most people, this is 'good enough'. There are reasons to change it though.

Certain songs compress really well, and you won't hear the difference between high and low bitrates, but other songs sound a lot different when encoded at lower rates. The easiest way to get a little more quality with almost the same file size it to go to 'custom' settings and click the VBR Box. This will add a little more size to the files that are harder to compress, but they will sound better.

Most people think that 160 kbps AAC sounds virtually the same as the CD, While 192 kbps MP3 will sound the same as a CD. And for people that want the highest quality, 256 is the benchmark for MP3.

If you pick the apple lossless encoder it is the same sound as the original CD, just compressed to 1/2 the size of a full file, which is about 1000 kbps.

Upgrading a macbook hard drive:

It is not as difficult as some upgrades on other old laptops used to be. The hard drive easy to get to and if your handy with a screwdriver you may want to try.

This guide shows you step by step.

On apple's website, they show how to replace the hard drive. They fail to mention the fact that you need a special torx screwdrive to move the caddie from the old to the new drive.

When selecting a hard drive, the most important part is to get a 2.5 inch sata drive. I got a 2.5 inch Western digital passport drive from newegg.com.

The hardest part was prying open the hard drive case without destroying it, but if you manage to, you can put the old hard disk from the Macbook in the enclosure and have a handy portable hard drive.

Playing windows movies in quicktime:

If Flip4mac is not letting you play all the windows movies that you want to see, there is another one called Perian.

It will let you play flash video files as well as others.

Game software:

Y8.com is a bunch of online free games, my daughter likes penguin diner, but there are a bunch of adult games on there too. Also if you search for Scooby, there are a bunch of scooby doo games. My favorite one is called tower defense.

Other stuff:

I found a signal booster for a iphone that is interesting.

Also this page claims that the new 2.1 iphone software even fixes the signal strength!

WobZip:

Wobzip is a website that will let you take an archive that you can not open and extract the contents. It is just like a web version of stuffit expander.

Musicbranz is an mp3 automatic tagger.

This program lets you fix the tags in itunes.
